Creative Halloween Costumes Based on Iconic Films and Shows

There’s a chill in the air, the leaves are crisp and golden, and the days are getting shorter – Halloween is right around the corner!

We are thrilled to be welcoming back Adventure Cinema to the former Filton Airfield, the touring outdoor cinema company, for a spooktacular Halloween week of films. From 27 October – 1 November, iconic films such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Ghostbusters, The Nightmare Before Christmas and many more! To see a full list of showings and to buy tickets, visit adventurecinema.co.uk.

Halloween is going to be quite different this year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still find ways to have fun safely. Whether you’re heading to a spooky drive-in, hosting a virtual party or just doing #HalloweenAtHome, we’ve put together a list of creative costumes based on iconic films and shows for you to try this year.

1. Margot, The Royal Tenenbaums

Margot Tenenbaum is the mysterious, elegant and sulky sister in Wes Anderson’s iconic quirky comedy, ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’, about a dysfunctional and estranged family reunited when their father attempts a reconciliation. This costume is ideal for women looking for something simple to put together.

Wes Anderson, Buena Vista Home Entertainment (Firm), (2002), The Royal Tenenbaums.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 x orange barrette
  • 1 x dirty blonde bob
  • 1 x oversized fur coat
  • 3 x layers of black kohl eyeliner

2. Joe Exotic, Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness

How could we not include the most viral TV show of the year in this list? Joe Exotic is the infamous former owner of the Garold Wayne Exotic Animal Memorial Park, the Oklahoma zoo which has been home to over 200 big cats since opening in 1999. Joe is also star of ‘Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness’, the smash hit Netflix show about his zoo and rivalry with Big Cat Rescue owner Carole Baskin. Joe is a Halloween costume waiting to happen, with his bleach blonde mullet, cheetah print shirts and excessive piercings.

Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin, Netflix, 2020, Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 x mullet
  • 1 x exotic shirt
  • 1 x cap
  • 5 x fake piercings

3. Moira, Schitt's Creek

Moira Rose is the eccentric, ex-soap star wife of Johnny Rose and mother of their adult children, David and Alexis in the hit show ‘Schitt’s Creek’ on Netflix. Moira quickly became a fan favourite for her iconic accessories, eclectic collection of wigs and unrecognisable accent.

Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, ITV Studios Global Entertainment, 2015, Schitts Creek.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 x black fur coat
  • 1 x crazy wig
  • 10 x layers of accessories
  • 1 x confusing transatlantic accent

4. Ron Burgundy, Anchorman

Will Ferrell plays the chauvinistic host of the top-rated San Diego television station, set in the 1970’s, threated by his talented new female co-host Veronica. Ron likes expensive suits, cashmere jumpers and cologne made from panthers, however, if you don’t already own these things, then you can still recreate the character with just a few simple pieces!

Adam McKay, DreamWorks Pictures, 2004, Ancorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 x red suit
  • 1 x fake moustache
  • 1 x fake cigar

5. Maddy, Euphoria

The hit teen show ‘Euphoria’ created the official Gen Z uniform, replacing neutral and ‘barely-there’ makeup popularised by millennials for neon eyeliner, rhinestones and glitter. If you’re looking for a fun costume, then why not try Maddy Perez, the high drama cheerleader with a wardrobe even Paris Hilton would be jealous of.

Sam Levinson, HBO, 2019, Euphoria.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 x packs of rhinestones
  • 1 x pot of glitter
  • 1 x neon eyeshadow palette

6. Brad and Janet, The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Next week, the iconic Rocky Horror Picture Show will be screened at the Adventure Drive-In at the former Filton Airfield. For an easy, last minute couples costume, try sifting through your wardrobe for a pink baby doll dress and brown zip jacket and you’re Brad and Janet, the naïve newlyweds who stumble upon the Annual Transylvanian Convention!

Jim Sharman, 20th Century Fox, 1975, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 x babydoll dress
  • 1 x white cardigan
  • 1 x brown jacket
  • 1 x pair of square framed glasses
